The Global Young Academy which supports the establishment and coordination of National Young Academies around the world has set up the Global Health Working Group (GHWG). The aim of the GHWG is to support prominent young researchers from all over the world in discussions about global health policies (in relation to clinical medicine, public health, environmental health and social studies of health and illness). Prof. Bartosz Karaszewski M.D. Ph.D., Head of the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of Gdańsk, has become the first leader of the GHWG’s team.

The GHWG covers selected important problems of human health through preparing GYA statements (i.e. position or commentary papers in responsible scientific journals) and representing GYA on forums and meetings on the subject. The statements or opinions concern either problems initiated by the WG or issues already debated by other relevant bodies eg, WHO, G20 or the European Commission. The working group will present voices of young scientists in the meetings and conferences such as Global Health Summit, World Health Assembly, UNFCCC conference of parties meetings and negotiations on climate change to address health etc.

The Global Young Academy (GYA) was officially founded in February, 2010 with support by the IAP: the Global Network of Science Academies (including the Polish Academy of Science) With the help of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities BBAW and the German Young Academy, the GYA has received start-up funding from the Volkswagen Foundation.

The Global Young Academy has reached its full capacity with 200 members, leading young scientists (defined as an average age of 35 years and at the beginning of their independent academic career), currently has three representatives from Polish scientific institutions.
