Inline skaters join the fight against breast cancer

4.05.2015

Five hundred people participated in a skating critical mass event “Wyroluj raka” (“Skate through cancer”) on April 25th 2015 in Gdańsk. This event was organized by the members of the Student Scientific Club at the MUG Department of Oncologic Surgery and the Academic Oncology Society. The skaters met at the Plac Zebrań Ludowych and skated Gdańsk main streets in a 15-kilometer loop.

Starting at 17:00 each participant received a start packet that included a “Wyroluj raka” (“Skate through cancer”) shirt, a bag with the event logo, a reflective bracelet and a bottle of water. As always during events organized by these students, the participants had a chance to visit a booth where they could learn more about breast cancer, its warning symptoms and even learn how to properly self-examine breasts.

The peloton of people skating along to the rhythm of loud music was quite a sight to see. They skated for about 1.5 hours and were assisted by the police and paramedics. All participants crossed the finish line in happy mood and some of them won additional prizes in a lottery.

The event was organized in order to raise awareness of breast cancer in a fun way as well as to promote sport & fitness activities such as inline skating. The students hope that such events will encourage women to have regular breast exams. Unfortunately, the participation in cancer screening examinations is still low in Poland.
