Prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz, Head of the MUG Department of Hypertension and Diabetology, was awarded by the City of Gdańsk the 2014 Jan Heweliusz Scientific Prize in the natural sciences category. The prize Commission recognized prof. Narkiewicz for his exceptional achievements in discovering new mechanisms connecting circulatory diseases with breathing disturbances during sleep.

Twenty-one years ago, in 1994, prof. Olgierd Narkiewicz (prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz’ father) was awarded the same prize. “It is the first time in the history of the Heweliusz Prize that a second generation researcher from the same family is awarded,” noted Adam Adamowicz (President of the City of Gdańsk).

In the humanities and social sciences category, prof. Mieczysław Nurek (Institute of History at the University of Gdańsk) was awarded for his contribution to the understanding of 20th century history, particularly the political relations of superpowers and smaller countries.

The Prizes were presented during a ceremony at the Town Hall of the Main City (Ratusz Głównego Miasta Gdańska) on January 28th.
