Assistant Professor Jacek Sznurkowski MD PhD (MUG Department of Oncologic Surgery) is the first Polish doctor to present a lecture at the International Gynecological Cancer Society Congress.
His abstract “Human papillomavirus status of primary tumor is an independent prognostic factor for survival and modulates local immune response in vulvar squamous cell carcinoma” (by J.J. Sznurkowski, A. Zawrocki, W. Biernat) was selected for the oral presentation session about vulvar cancer. The findings suggest that the vuvlar cancer developing during an HPV infection is different from the non-HPV related cancer. Both types not only differ in terms of prognosis and radio- or chemo-sensitivity, but interestingly have a completely different immunocompetent cell “signatures.”
This year’s 15th IGCS Congress will take place on November 7th-11th in Melbourne, Australia. The IGCS is the most important forum for exchanging the latest basic and clinical research in gynecological oncology. There have been only a handful of Polish researchers who were invited to present their findings at the IGCS, including dr. Sznurkowski in 2010.
