MUG researcher awarded by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences

Beata S. Lipska-Ziętkiewicz MD PhD, assistant professor at the MUG Department of Biology and Genetics, was awarded the Tadeusz Browicz Prize of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kraków. Since 1998 this prize has been awarded for outstanding achievements in the field of medicine.

Doctor Lipska-Ziętkiewicz’s research interests focus on renal diseases, particularly the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome and its complications. She was awarded primarily for her research on the genetic basis of the steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). As a result of her research, doctor Lipska-Ziętkiewicz developed a diagnostic algorithm for teenagers with SRNS, developed treatment guidelines for the subset of patients with WT1 gene mutations and established the distribution of particular mutations of the NPHS2 gene for various European, Middle Eastern and Latin American populations.
