On October 9th 2013, a team of doctors from the MUG Department of Maxillo-Facial and Dental Surgery chaired by prof. Adam Włodarkiewicz cooperated with prof. Marcin Kozakiewicz (Medical University of Łódź) to conduct a complete resection and reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint using an artificial prosthetic. Only a handful of such operations were conducted in Poland so far. In this particular case, the goal was to remove the structures destroyed by a proliferative process and to replacing them with artificial elements which 6 weeks after the operation will fully restore the function of the patient’s temporomandibular joint. The surgical team consisted of prof. Marcin Kozakiewicz, dr Marcin Niekra and dr Piotr Chomik. The successful implantation of the prosthetic joint and short recovery time give hope that such operations will become a permanent part of the treatment offered by the MUG Department of Maxillo-Facial and Dental Surgery.
