Mysteries from the museum shelf

10.09.2013

Some of the exhibits travel a long way in order to find their home at the MUG Museum collection. Some of them are not directly linked with the history of our University but are valuable from the medical history point of view. Such example are the two prosthetics of the lower limb which found their way from Southern Poland. They were found just after WWII in an attic of a house in a small town in the Lower Silesia province and were donated to us by Mr. Władysław Bożek, thus saving them from destruction.

One of the prosthetics is in excellent condition thanks to the careful reconstruction supervised by dr Bogumił Przeździak at the Orthopedic Supplies Workshop at the Św. Wojciech Hospital in Gdańsk. Dr Przeździak’s detailed descriptions reveal just how complex those protheses are.

The prosthetic was made most likely at the beginning of the XX century. Its hip rail has a unique, rarely seen design with two unequal joints.

The September edition of the “Mysteries from the museum shelf” concludes the series. All the exhibits described throughout the year will be presented at an exhibition starting on October 8th 2013, on the day of official inauguration of the academic year at MUG.
