English Division students Rabia Waheed, Tahira Waheed, Satyajit Ray, Sanharib Chamoun, Nina Koohnejad, Hanna Rahimi and Paula Gorski from the Pediatric Oncology Scientific Circle supervised by Ewa Bień MD, PhD and Małgorzata Krawczyk MD, won first place at the pediatric session of the 21st International Student Scientific Conference for Students and Young Doctors which took place on May 23-25 2013 in Gdańsk. Their original research “Psychological, social and intellectual status of pediatric cancer survivors” is a study of 45 patients who were 2-5 years after completing treatment for their neoplastic disease. The authors demonstrate that the patients’ significant problems with adapting to “regular” life, particularly in case of patients with solid tumors, require more psychological and educational help not only during but also after treatment. The students’ research was made possible with the help of Barbara Kaczorowska-Hać MD PhD, Danuta Sierota MD PhD, both from the Pediatric Hematology Outpatient Clinic and the Pediatric Oncology Outpatient Clinic at the MUG Department of Pediatrics, Hematology and Oncology.
