Students summarize the "Touch the Breast" project

Over 3000 flyers with instructions on how to self-examine breasts were handed out during the breast cancer prevention project “Touch the Breast” organized by Student Scientific Club at the MUG Department of Oncologic Surgery and the Academic Oncology Society. The project ended on April 27th 2013 with a closing ceremony attended by the representatives of the Gdańsk City Council, Gdańsk County authorities, project partners, MUG oncologic surgeons and many guests.

The project lasted 2 months and consisted of 11 events in which several thousand men and women participated. One of these events was giving free advice about breast cancer and mammography on board of a historic tram that visited Gdańsk’s busiest areas. Students taught breast self examination and breast cancer facts to over 700 young women during the numerous meetings in high schools and higher learning institutions in Gdańsk as well as Pruszcz Gdański. The final event of this project was the “I will Outrun Cancer” running event in Old Town Gdańsk. Such variety of events allowed the students to reach women of every age group. The project’s website had over 8000 visitors from all over Poland as well as abroad. The “Touch the Breast” project is over for now, however the students are already planning next year’s even more expanded edition.
