On Saturday April 20th 2013, the running event “I Will Outrun Cancer” ended the breast cancer prevention project “Touch the Breast” organized by the Student Scientific Club at the Department of Oncologic Surgery and the Academic Oncology Society. Participants were able to try their strength at three distances: 1km, 5km and 10km.
Among the participants there were prof. Janusz Jaśkiewicz, dr. hab. Tomasz Jastrzębski and dr. Kamil Drucis from the MUG Department of Oncologic Surgery as well as special guests: cyclist Lech Piasecki, javelin-throwe Bernadeta Blechacz and rower Adam Korol.
Before the 1km run, the participants had a chance for a short warm-up. Every participant had their run-time measured by special chips and sent via text message to their phones. All participants received medals, whereas the fastest runners in all 3 events received trophies and small gifts. In total, several hundred people ran that day. The runners as well as organizers expressed positive opinions about the event. “We are very happy that so many people ran and that the entire event went very smoothly” said Jakub Piotrkowski from the Student Scientific Club at the Department of Oncologic Surgery. In addition to running, at the event there was on opportunity to learn how to self-examine breasts and sign-up for a free mammogram. The organizers plan to repeat the event next year and hope that the “I will outrun cancer” run will become a tradition.
