Bartosz Karaszewski, MD PhD from the MUG Adult Neurology Clinic is one of the first Polish researchers chosen to join the Global Young Academy (GYA), an international organization for the leading young scientists. Besides Dr. Karaszewski, the GYA has also granted membership to Roman Szewczyk, PhD (Warsaw University of Technology) and Borys Wróbel, PhD (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and the Oceanography Institute at the Polish Academy of Science).
GYA was started as a result of the meetings and discussions organized during 2008 and 2009 by the IAP (Global Network of Science Academies) during the World Economic Forum in Davos. The GYA has 200 members, young researchers chosen from around the world based on their scientific achievements (“excellence of science”) as well as involvement in developing science (“commitment to service”). A membership term lasts four years. The Academy is currently co-chaired by prof. Rees Kassen from Canada and prof. Bernard Slippers from South Africa and its Senior Advisory Board includes exceptional and experienced scientists such as prof. Bruce Alberts (Editor in Chief of “Science”, former President of the National Academy of Sciences) and prof. Helmut Schwarz (President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation).
The Global Young Academy’s headquarters are in Berlin and is financed, among others, by IAP, the Volkswagen Foundation, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
