Students celebrate St. Lucy's Day at the Swedish Consulate

13.12.2012

Swedish students of English Division at the Medical University of Gdańsk organized a march to celebrate Saint Lucy Day on December 10th. An additional reason to celebrate was the inauguration of the Swedish General Consulate in Gdańsk. The inauguration was officially conducted by Staffan Herrström, the Swedish Ambassador in Poland.

Gdańsk is now the only city in Poland where a Swedish General Consulate is located. It will take over the duties of the Honorary Consul, who represented Sweden in Gdańsk since 2007.

The former Honorary Consul, Dr. Tadeusz Iwanowski will take over the duties of Consul General. He explains that the changes are due to the increasing presence of Swedish citizens in Gdańsk and the surrounding region. The Swedish Consulate serves the following provinces of Northern Poland: kujawsko-pomorskie, pomorskie and warmińsko-mazurskie. “We have many tourists visiting us, three large ferries and several flights each day which in the summer season means several thousand visitors from Sweden,” explains Consul Iwanowski. “We also have about 500 Swedish students studying medicine in Gdańsk and in the surrouding provinces we have more and more residents who are Swedish or who receive Swedish retirement benefits”.
