3.04.2023

The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland granted scientists from the Medical University of Gdańsk a patent for an invention entitled Element do wykonania zastawki serca oraz sposób wytwarzania zmodyfikowanej bakteryjnej celulozy do wytwarzania tego elementu (Element for making a heart valve and a method of producing modified bacterial cellulose for producing this element). Its creators are researchers from the Department of Cardiac & Vascular Surgery of the MUG: Dr. Habil. Piotr Siondalski and Magdalena Kołaczkowska, Ph.D. in cooperation with the Shipbuilding Technology Centre, the University of Gdańsk, the Gdańsk University of Technology, the Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery and Bowil Biotech company.

The patent was granted on the basis of extensive scientific research conducted as part of the project entitled Przedkliniczne badania możliwości zastosowania oryginalnej, polskiej bionanocelulozy (BNC) w medycynie regeneracyjnej w aspekcie bioimplantów w kardiochirurgii i chirurgii naczyniowej (Preclinical studies on the possibility of using the original, Polish bionanocellulose (BNC) in regenerative medicine in the aspect of bioimplants in cardiac and vascular surgery), implemented under contract No. PBS2/A7/16/ 2013 of 4th of December 2013 and financed by the National Center for Research and Development.

The long-term achievement of the conducted research is the development of an excellent biomaterial that can be used as a bioimplant in the circulatory system. This has been proven in subsequent experiments carried out in animal models of implantation of vascular prostheses and heart valve prostheses made of bacterial cellulose.
