The Medical Science Day is behind us

From the early morning hours of June 23rd, the Collegium Biomedicum building was taken over by crowds of youth who were taking part in the VII edition of the Medical Science Day. This was the largest medical science promotion event in the Pomorskie province. Prof. Janusz Moryś, the MUG Rector, welcomed all the guests and invited them to take advantage of the presentations offered. Among the notable guests were dr. Tadeusz Zaleski (Representative of the Pomorskie Council of Rectors), prof. Marcin Gruchała (Vice-Rector for Student Affairs), prof. Leszek Bieniaszewski (Vice-Rector for Education), Zbigniew Krawiec (Vice-Chancellor for Technical Affairs) as well as the representatives of the event sponsors. During the mini-lectures we found out, among others, which parasites have enormous appetites and which could beat Olympic records, what happens to the human body after consuming alcohol and how are new medication produced. We also shared the secret about whether it is possible to effectively treat patients by using new media (e.g. video games), whether a medication can cause a blue discoloration of the skin and what are the rights of a young patient.

Besides the mini-lectures and lab experiment demonstrations, many workshops and free examinations were offered. Together with the little scientists we learned the basics of making cremes, ointments and simple cosmetics as well as how to safely remove ticks, use electricity as treatment and fight obesity in children and youth by using a vibration platform. Among the new events this year, there was a demonstration of artificial smog, measuring air quality and learning how to secure airways. Future midwives taught how to properly care for the newborns and dental students showed children how to care for their teeth. Of course the old favorites were also offered: the surgical suturing course, first aid course and tours of the Experimental Animal Lab.
